Bights & Sounds is owned and operated by Vera and Brian Avery, and Ed Stewart and Chris Pike.

Vera, originally from St. John’s and moved to Random Island in her teens, is a school teacher at the Clarenville Primary school. Brian spent the majority of his childhood in Hickman’s Harbour, Random Island, after his family was re-settled from the isolated fishing outport of Deer Harbour on the eastern end of the Island. Like many rural Newfoundland families, Brian’s roots are deeply tied to the fishery. Generation after generation have made a living from the waters surrounding Newfoundland, either as hardy seaman or tireless fisherman – or a combination of both.

Chris Pike is a recently retired primary school teacher. Her family resettled from an islet known as Flat Island in the outer reaches of Bonavista Bay. Her father was an outport fisherman who was encouraged by the government of the day to abandon the resource which had sustained rural economies for five centuries. He, and his neighbours, abandoned a way of life to turn their hand to trades work to build some of the expanding “urban” areas under Newfoundland Premier Joey Smallwood’s infamous resettlement program in the 50s and 60s. Chris has a strong attachment to traditional Newfoundland heritage, which is displayed in print and antique in their heritage home at the beach. Besides being actively involved in Bights & Sounds, she owns and operates the Early Discoveries Day Care Centre in Clarenville.

Ed’s ancestry is tied closer to the interior of Newfoundland – the land rather than to the sea. His ancestors pioneered the settlement of the inner reaches of Bonavista Bay - logging, sawmilling, log-driving and living off the natural bounty of the interior and the estuary of the Terra Nova River. Ed inherited his love and respect for the land from his grandfather - a riverman in his day, who drove pulpwood for the A.N.D. Company and in later years, lent his hand to the protection of the Terra Nova as a fisheries guardian. Ed is an avid kayaker, hiker and birder…a true lover of the outdoors! Ed is the District Manager with the Department of Natural Resources in Clarenville.

Ed, Brian, Vera and Chris have always taken an interest in tourism. As avid travelers themselves they realize the beauty, adventure and that “un-definable” quality that Newfoundland has to offer. They appreciate the comforts and the finer touches that turn a place to stay into a place to remember.

It’s your place. Enjoy.
