Clarenville is simply the best location from which to explore the Discovery Trail region. It is centrally located and within a short leisurely drive from all corners, attractions, historic sites and communities within this infamous region.

The Discovery Trail is a panorama of scenery, historic sites, coastal towns and villages, and natural wonders. There is plenty to do and see with interpretative and historic sites, museums, craft shops, and historical pageantries. Opportunities to experience nature include whale watching, bird watching, and berg-chasing. It has become the fastest growing destination in Newfoundland & Labrador, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year.

    Hiking & Walking
    The Clarenville Area and the Discovery Trail is blessed with spectacular hiking/walking opportunities.
  • Clarenville Trails - Clarenville is blessed with a wide variety of nature walking & hiking trails throughout the town including: The Rotary Trail, The Wellness Trail, Bare Mountain Trail and the Shoal Harbour Causeway.
  • T’Railway – The province-wide “T’Railway” (the nic name given to the former railway bed) is part of the Trans Canada Trail, and provides a great primary trail which winds through the Town of Clarenville town and heads west through the beautiful Shoal Harbour valley, towards Terra Nova and beyond. It is great for leisurely strolls, mountain biking, jogging, ATVing, snowmobiling, etc. 
  • Hike Discovery - The Discovery Trail is home to numerous breathtaking coastal hiking trails including the famous Skerwink Trail, recognized by several publications as one of the best hikes in Canada!
  • Terra Nova National Park

    The Clarenville area is blessed with 4 coastal golf courses, including
  • Twin Rivers - the province’s top, award-winning 18-hole course at Terra Nova Golf Resort, Port Blandford, just 15 minutes west of Clarenville.
  • Eagle Creek – a challenging 9-hole course at Terra Nova Golf Resort, Port Blandford.
  • The View Golf Resort – the area’s newest 9-hole course with spectacular views, located in Princeton, just 30 min from Clarenville.
  • Brookside Golf Course – a enjoyable 9-hole course located in Hatchet Cove, just 15 min from Clarenville.

Boat Tours
Just a short drive from Clarenville, guests can take advantage of premiere boat tours that highlight the area’s most pristine and spectacular areas. Participate in one of Coastal Connections award-winning expeditions and “you will learn about this place, participate in scientific studies, and view the wonders of our nature - in the sky, on the land, and particularly in the sea”. Whales & Icebergs
Depending on the timing of your visit, you may be able to catch of glimpse of the 30,000 lb whale or a 10,000 year old iceberg. If a glance from the shore is not enough for you, the boat tour operators in our area will surely get you up close to these natural wonders.

Kayaking
The sheltered waters around the Clarenville and Random Island area provide some of the best sea-kayaking in the province. Paddle trough secluded coves…visit re-settled communities. Whether you’re a first time kayaker, or a seasoned veteran, we can provide you with the guiding and itinerary to match your interests.

Birding
The Discovery Trail is recognized as one of the province's best bird watching areas. It is home to dozens of species and is in the flight paths of the various currents and flows, which regularly bring "rare birds" to the area.

Explore Random Island
Random Island is located on Route 231 and snugly fits into Trinity Bay like that special piece of a jigsaw puzzle. It is approx 40km in length and 15 km in width at its widest end, Random Island is the largest island in the province. With its roads winding through wooded hillsides, and then down to sea level, traveling Random Island is like a roller coaster ride of adventure.

Terra Nova National Park
Terra Nova National Park is Canada's most easterly national park, and is only a short distance away from any of our vacation homes. Terra Nova National Park offers a wide variety of activities, and has something for everyone. Spectacular hiking, kayaking, birding, mountain biking, skiing, fishing, and much more.

Visit Bonavista – Elliston Area
John Cabot discovered this New Founde Lande at Cape Bonavista in 1497. The Bonavista area is rich in culture and heritage, with several world-class attractions such as Ryan Premises National Historic Site, the Matthew Legacy, Cape Bonavista Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site, the Dungeon Provincial Park, the Mockbeggar Plantation Provincial Historic

Town of Elliston
Be sure to visit the Town of Elliston - "the Root Cellar Capital of the World!" Stroll through the town and see the more than 100 root cellars. Great beach too!

Visit Historic Trinity Bight
Trinity Bight, just a short drive from Clarenville, is a hub of Newfoundland culture and heritage. The Town of Trinity is one of the most quaint, picturesque and well-preserved historical villages in the province. It home to numerous museums, historic sites, heritage buildings and Rising Tide Theatre. Be sure to visit Trinity East and Port Rexton, home to the infamous Skerwink Trail. Also visit Cape Random Trust, the production set for the award-winning mini-series "Random Passage" - a detailed depiction of a 19th century coastal village. A must see!

Professional Theatre
We are delighted to say that Clarenville is now the home of a professional theatre company - the New Curtain Theatre Company. Several productions are currently in the works for the 2007-2008. Touch base for more information!

Trinity is home to the iconic Rising Tide Theatre’s “Seasons in the Bight Theatre Festival” featuring musicals, dramas, comedies, dinner theaters and the "New Founde Land" - an outdoor pageant that portrays the history of Trinity.

Clarenville Dragway
If lighting fast cars is your thing, the Clarenville Dragway is a must see. Located 10 minutes outside Clarenville, The Dragway is open most every weekend during the summer for its races. Check out their schedule online at http:// www.5liter.nf.net

Fitness & Swimming
Besides the variety of outdoors activities available, Clarenville is also home to 2 fitness centers – Global Gym and Curves - as well as an indoor swimming pool – The Wave. These three centres are conveniently located all under the one roof.

Shopping
Clarenville offers a variety of shopping experiences from grocery stores and department stores to one-of-a-kind boutique specialty shops. The Town’s two main retail areas are the Random Square Mall, located on Manitoba Drive and the Clarenville Shopping Centre on Memorial Drive. A couple of “must-see” shops for all visitors are the Barn Loft Gift Emporium and the Salt Box. Depending on the season, visitors will also witness an array of road-side vendors selling fresh seafood, vegetables and crafts. This is “normal”, feel free to stop, and have a look. These vendors offer great products at great prices.  The Discovery Trail region is filled with neat shops and studios. Dining
Clarenville has numerous dining experiences to satisfy every palette – fast food, elegant dining, family restaurants, café style, and more.

Nightlife & Entertainment
As for nightlife, there is something for everyone. From the cozy pubs such as Flannigan’s, George’s, Browning’s and Easy Street, to the larger venues such as My Rec Room and Yahoos. Live entertainment is available most weekends. Interesting in billiards? Check out West Side Charlies. The perfect spot to catch the “big game” on “big screen” is Don Cherry’s Sports Grill

Winter Activities
Our area is naturally blessed with large annual snowfall amounts, and phenomenal natural and built attractions that make winter a special time. There is abundance of activity to keep the family entertained each winter – both indoors and out.

White Hills Ski Resort
Nestled across 55 acres of ski and board terrain in the majestic hills of the Discovery Trail, White Hills Resort has the proud distinction of being called "Eastern Newfoundland's Winter Playground". Here you'll find a number of choice trails waiting for you to explore on skis, snowboard, or snowshoes.

Clarenville Nordic Ski Club
The Clarenville Nordic Ski Club offers 40 kilometers of groomed trails in the breathtaking wilderness around White Hills Ski Resort. The Club offers fun for the whole family with three back country huts for breaks and lunches. The Club has weekly guided tours of the trail system as well as instructional clinics for both beginners and experienced skiers.

Snowmobiling
The Clarenville area is the eastern gateway to the provincial groomed snowmobile trail system. The region provides one of the most fantastic snowmobiling systems in the province with hundreds of kilometers of groomed and marked trails, combined with endless backcountry terrain to explore.

Winter in Terra Nova National Park can be especially rewarding. Quiet trails and snow-covered trees greet winter enthusiasts who come to cross-country ski, camp, snowshoe, ice-fish, participate in special events or just savour the beauty of the landscape.

During the winter, come to the Clarenville Stadium and take in an action packed game of hockey. The Clarenville Caribous are part of the high-flying, hard-hitting West Coast Senior Hockey League. Check out the team, schedule and standings at http://www.clarenvillecaribous.com
